What is a Modem Driver?
Since the 60’s when the need for teletype to be transmitted over telephone lines was made a
reality, modems have been in business. They gather data from your system and transmit that
data over telephone lines, fiber optic lines or even air to deliver that data to the modem
on the receiving end. It can also receive data from that system back to your computer. This
technology is what allows us to enjoy today’s digital technologies such as e-mail and the
Internet.
Your Modem Driver is the piece of code that enables this transaction of data. It takes the
data sent by you and packages it for the modem and also ‘unwraps’ or decodes packages that
are received from locations around the world. Once decoded, the data is available for any
number of applications on your system.
Will I have problems with my Modem Drivers?
It’s not often that you will experience problems with your Modem Driver unless one of the
following circumstances has occurred:
- The modem driver does not work when a new modem is installed or with new software
provided by your ISP.
- You’ve recently upgraded your operating system.

- Click Update Driver Software.

Update Driver Software Wizard.

manufacturers website, thus ensuring all recent patches and features are acquired. The major

these steps:
- Select your Operating System
- Select Product Line
- Select Product Model
- Download modem driver
- Reboot computer
The data for these selections can be found from the Modem properties screen accessed above.
Once selections are entered and the reboot completed, you will now have the full security,
speed and features available for your modem.
