What is a Display Driver?
A display driver is a computer program that provides a graphic architecture, basically a set
of routines or instructions, for the operation of your system video card. Software and
visual components of the system talk to the video card through the driver. The video card
then makes that data or action visible on the monitor.
What is wrong with my monitor/Display Driver(s)?
Windows may be able to operate some video cards with a universal display driver but this will
not allow you to experience the full functionality of your video card and may also result in
errors such as:
- Low resolution
- Slow game speeds
- Slow playback or no video for media files
- Poor graphics displays
- Incorrect color schemes
Below are some additional causes of display and driver problems:
- The display driver has become outdated and causes conflicts with a new monitor or new
games or other programs that are graphics dependent.
- The computer operating system has been upgraded. Note: This is especially true for the
release of Windows 7.
- The display driver has been damaged or is missing files due to a virus or other
malicious application.
How do I fix my monitor/Display Drivers?
- Installing the driver that came with your PC can solve outdated and incorrect driver
issues. It is usually found on the system installation CD. If you do not have your CD or
if you have a Dell computer, you can download the correct driver on-line. This will
update an outdated driver and/or install the correct manufacturer’s codes to achieve
full video card functionality.
Before heading to the correct site follow these steps to ensure you select the right driver
for download:
- Click Start/Control Panel/ System.
- Click the Hardware tab, and then Device Manager.
- Click Sound, video, and game controllers – Under this section, select
your video card. Write down the name of your video card and any other series of product
name data that is available.
After you have your video card manufacturer’s name and the model of your card, click the
appropriate site below and follow these steps:
- Select your Product Type (video or graphics card)
- Select Product Series (from data gathered above)
- Select Product Model (also from data above)
- Once the Product Model is selected, the correct driver will appear on the screen. Simply
select that driver and it will initiate an automatic download and installation of the
driver to your system.
- Reboot your computer
