About Intel(R) Drivers

Intel (R) drivers are often mistaken as a family of drivers separate from other Intel devices. The (R) annotation that almost all Intel devices are prepended with is actually a punctuated typeface of the registered trademark symbol. Intel devices are listed in the Windows device manager with this annotation to denote Intel Corporations registered trademark of the Intel brand. Computers powered by Intel processors are likely to also incorporate several other Intel devices for performing various functions such as memory management, storage handling, audio/video processing, and much more. Most computer infrastructure powered by Intel devices are managed by chipsets, or a collection of computer chips that work together to serve a single purpose. All Intel devices and chipsets are operated by driver software written by and proprietery to Intel, specifically for their hardware devices.

Each Intel device has associated with it a specific driver for supplying the device with the software instructions it requires for performing its designated function. Intel driver software is written specifically for Intel device architecture, although there are som unified drivers developed by Intel for certain families of their chipsets, yet these drivers are still for only Intel devices. All hardware devices have their own unique software.

Intel drivers enable Intel devices to interface with one another across the motherboard and with the computer's operating system. Drivers create compatibility by enabling simple communication. Hardware devices require drivers in order to operate and are essentially incomplete without them. Driver software is versatile and allows the opportunity for physical hardware to be improved without being replaced by updating the driver software. Intel driver software may be updated to improve the performance of the Intel device. Intel develops the updates to their drivers and hosts them freely, but obtaining the right software can be difficult due to the sheer number of Intel devices.

Common Intel(R) Driver Issues

If one or more of your Intel hardware devices is producing errors or is not being recognized by the operating system, there may be a problem with the Intel device driver. Intel device drivers tend to become outdated very quickly as updates are made available for pre-existing hardware devices and as new hardware devices are developed. Poor performance and failure can indicate that there are underlying problems with the device driver software that needs to be fixed. A solution can almost always be found in an update.

Errors and other general device problems typically stem from problems with the device drivers. It's important to be able to recognize and identify problems with device drivers by being familiar with common symptoms that often accompany device driver errors.

Common symptoms of device driver failure...

  • One or more hardware devices are not recognized by the operating system.
  • One or more hardware devices are recognized but are not functioning.
  • One or more hardware devices takes longer than usual to reaspond to commands.
  • The computer takes a long time to boot up.
  • The display produces graphic anomolies.
  • The computer will not boot up.
  • The computer randomly shuts down during operation.

The problems listed are most often caused by driver failure. In order to maintain a fully operating and stable computer system, you should keep your device drivers up-to-date. The first and best step to take when troubleshooting driver errors is to first update the driver. Updating the driver eliminates the possibility that out-of-date driver software is causing the hardware device to fail. We have compiled a guide to fixing Intel drivers manually. The guide will walk you through the process of locating, obtaining and installing the updated drivers for your device. An alternate, easier method for updating device drivers is to use an automated driver update utility that will streamline the process of finding, downloading and installing all of your drivers with a single click.
