About ATI Video Cards

ATI is a subsidiary of AMD that develops and produces graphical processing units or video cards, as they are most commonly known. Founded in 1985 as Array Technologies Incorporated (ATI), the graphical hardware powerhouse has maintained, throughout it's history, a standard of excellence in the progression and innovation of new and unique graphical and video hardware.

A video card or graphical processing unit is the computer hardware device that interprets graphical signals and produces them as images on the display unit. The video card is responsible for alleviating all graphical processing tasks from the central processing unit (CPU) in order to more efficiently handle processing tasks and enhance the performance of the computer as a whole.

Following the merger of ATI and AMD in 2006, the combined efforts of both companies have displayed some of the finest video cards and graphical hardware devices that are available today. Most notable of all their products, the Radeon line of video cards has enjoyed over a decade of success amongst computer users. After years of research and development, the Radeon card has evolved into one of the best multi-purpose graphical hardware devices.

About ATI Video Card Drivers

Although they are specialists in hardware design and manufacturing, ATI also develops small software components for their hardware that creates functionality for the device and bridges the compatibility gap between hardware and software. These small software components are called drivers. A driver contains all of the interfacing and operating instructions for a hardware device. The ATI video driver instructs the ATI video device how to communicate with the other hardware devices that make up a computer and with the operating system that the user interfaces with.

ATI developers attempt to improve the performance of the existing ATI video device by making changes to the driver that will allow it to operate more efficiently and with increased compatibility. Additionally, ATI supports users who attempt to create their own enhanced drivers for ATI video cards by offering open source tools for writing drivers. This network of professional and amateur driver developers has allowed ATI to “catalyze” the increased performance, speed and quality of their existing hardware.

The ATI video card driver updates are distributed freely from their website, yet obtaining and implementing the updated ATI video card driver can be challenging if you have device conflicts or aren't familiar with working with drivers. The next section will go into some of the common issues.

Common Issues with ATI Video Card Drivers

If you are experiencing problems with your computer display or ATI video card, the problem is likely to be caused by issues with the ATI video card driver. Video cards are under constant use during the operation of a computer. Due to the complex nature of it's task, a video card driver can begin to produce errors and problems from normal use over time. If the driver is out-of-date or corrupt, it may malfunction and produce unprecedented results on the display. Signs and symptoms of ATI video card errors and problems include...

Signs and Symptoms of ATI Video Card Failure

  • Anomalies in the display.
  • Irregular rendering of graphical elements.
  • Random display black-outs that are temporary and indefinite.
  • Error messages that pertain to the ATI video card.

If you are experiencing any of the above issues with your computer display, the ATI video card could be damaged or there is problem with the ATI video card driver itself. ATI video driver problems can arise for a number of reasons. Most often, the ATI video driver is out-of-date and needs to be updated. Other causes of ATI video driver failure include...

Common causes of failure...

  • The driver is missing or corrupt.
  • The driver is out-of-date.
  • Attempting to run a graphically intensive application with an outdated video driver.
  • Attempting to run an application that surpasses the capabilities of the device.
  • A previous attempt to update the driver failed.
  • The device is damaged or broken.

The first and best step to take to troubleshoot problems with the ATI video card is to update the driver. Updating the driver will often correct any and all problems that an ATI video card produces. The next section describes how to use our automated solution to driver installation and why it's better, but if you would like to install the drivers manually, you can use our Guide to Installing ATI Drivers.

If you go the manual route, be sure to follow the instructions carefully so you don't risk installing an incorrect driver. If you would like an automated approach to updating and installing all of your drivers, correctly see the section below.

How to Easily Download ATI Drivers

When updating your ATI drivers, you can either install drivers manually, or use an automated update tool to do the work for you. Manually updating can be dangerous if done incorrectly. Using the wrong driver or installing a driver that has a conflict with your other devices can create error messages or cause your computer to lose functionality. To avoid these problems, it's best to use a program that automatically finds the right drivers based on your system's unique profile. The easiest and safest solution is to use the automated tool, DriverUpdate.

Since a computer requires an exact driver configuration to work right, and there are potentially other devices on your computer that need to be updated first, it's important to update all of your drivers when installing an ATI driver. That's why using an automated tool like DriverUpdate is the safest way to get the drivers you need.

DriverUpdate automatically scans your PC to find the appropriate drivers, verifying devices you have installed and update histories. When it's done, all you have to do is push a button, and DriverUpdate begins the install process for you. ( Click Here To Download DriverUpdate )
